You know, to be honest, I love the kitchen, but I have NO idea where to start. Is there a "getting started" tutorial, like where to upload pieces to get feedback, or how to open a sketchbook?

yes sure, there are sticky announcements. when you enter any forum section, you will see them at the top, they explain all the various features.

We soon will also have a video tour guide with a sexy voice, showing all features. You will see, there are a lot of features but mostly just for fun and optional, so you will not be forced to use anything if you just want to hang out and post art.

here is the info about how to upload and post images:
[link]

Opening a Sketchbook or a museum showroom is in fact very simple. You can take a look around how the other do it.
Basically you simply open a new thread, write a short introduction and then post your work that you have uploaded to the gallery system. Then people will visit and leave comments, you reply comments and keep updating your thread with new artworks from times to times. All artworks are always posted in the same thread instead of opening a new thread for every new picture. This way people will get to know you better and will have it easier to keep track of your progress.

The sketchbook shall contain all kinds of scribbles, studies, sketches, unfinished work but also personal notes, like a journal. You can post there whatever is related to you and your art.

The Museum showrooms works pretty much the same but contain only finished work, the most polished artwork.

There is a new thread in the Kitchen for various questions, so if you get lost or need help with something you can post there, no need to be shy.
[link]

We also have a chat room. people there are nice and always help out newcomers.

You will see this is a very friendly community.

You know, I like the design, but you really need to move the top static content like 'featured art' to the bottom of the page. I'm not scrolling so much just to see the content on each page. :/ It sucks 'cuz you have a lot of cool things but I just can't be arsed to do such things.

Why would the promoted featured artwork get put on the bottom, isn't featured artwork supposed to be a privilege...

From a web design standpoint, it is a poor decision. That's that. The most user-friendly mantra you can have is "the user should click as least as possible" and the content should be as accessible as possible. No doubt Randis has a huge monitor to view his site on, but if my 1440 x 900 is not even nearly enough, that is a sign of poor web design. Further, he basically told me to fuck off, which is a sign of just being a poor person. :/

Hands down featured artists should never be at the bottom, and as a web designer you should know that.
If you're an artist and you are most likely posting on randis's site and visiting it you no doubtingly have a nice monitor that has at least a resolution of 1680 x 1050. So for the targeted audience I'm positive the website set up is dead on.
I don't think telling someone "you really need to" is a way to suggest something to someone, so you kind of stepped into the demanding stand point.
So again from an artist stand point having featured artists at the bottom of the page is straight out poor website design.
No offense but after reading your posts over you were stepping out of line far before randis said a single "hurtful" thing.

The featured artists at the top, besides being awful web design, doesn't even change. It's like, the most pretentious bullshit. You see the featured art once, that's that. No real reason to keep shoving it in people's faces, but he wouldn't understand that because he is a pretentious developer.

It doesn't matter if you like it or not, it's bad web design. Anyone who cares can scroll down, just like DeviantART. Notice how clean the layout is for dA. That is progression, that's modern web design.

Assuming people have 1680 x 1050 is absolutely ridiculous, and even if they did, they're still scrolling down. He's running a forum and expects people to do all the scrolling: an artist designed this site, not a web designer.

Did you seriously say "hurtful"? The exchanging of ideas is hurtful to you? Then why the hell am I even bothering with you if you're going to be some weak-spined little cipher? x.x;

Throwing around the word pretentious when you sound like a student fresh out of college who thinks they are a pro web designer, quit sticking your neck out into a field you just touched the surface of. Who really looks pretentious here? You realize that almost every professional art forum web site has their featured artists at the top of every page? Don't even throw DA around like it's a professional art forum, when it's just a gallery site that favors "Transgender porn, Giantess porn, and Diaper porn."

"Anyone who cares can scroll down" This is exactly why you are not understanding. Featured artists is a privilege and it should always be at the top; unlike the terrible logic behind hiding Daily deviations on the bottom, but DA has a target audience right so they can take the hit of hiding something that people really don't care about on the bottom. With the featured artists at the top anyone who cares can scroll down.

You were obviously "hurt" if you felt like Randis said to fuck off, even after that you are coming back and wasting your time here. Man your reading comprehension is out of this world, just like most the people on the internet. So keep spitting out these insults like the arrogant fool that you are, and just know in the end that your attitude won't get you anywhere especially if your best achievements are web based games that no one will play, haha and you're a web designer attempting game design... T.T

I'm going to go finish some more of my assignments in a major that won't keep me living in my mums house after I graduate.

Just touched the surface of? I've been doing it for quite some time. Who really looks pretentious here? Oh, uhm, Randis, expecting everyone to want to scroll down for his artistically designed website.

No I totally understand what you're saying, and your reasoning for it. He's got a target audience of a bunch of high-resolution artists who enjoy the site very much. The featured artists is a privilege, surely, but he doesn't even have the insight, or kindness, or know-how to make the featured artists change on each page. His navigation is pointless huge, and not clean.

No, I wasn't obviously hurt, nor should I be. I purposely state ideas (what I'm sure you'd call "picking arguments") for feedback, and so I can be the most correct in my thinking.

I can't help but feel you're incredibly unqualified to be talking about how my games will fail when you mockingly use "achievement" to describe the development of a web-based game. You have absolutely no merit to go on that the games will be a flop, except for the fact that my now undeveloped-for-a-year game MonBre is stagnating. I posted a topic in my own forum telling people why the game's design is so flawed and why I decided to code a second game. I know how to fix it, but the core design of the game was designed by a newbie, simple as that. MurCity, on the other hand, was designed only one year ago, when I not only had better coding techniques but had read (and now, have even read more) on game design.

I wouldn't expect anyone who even suggests that I'm actually out of college, to understand the concept of not needing college to learn things. I learned more about web design from reading Facebook's design docs in one week than these pompous (inb4 "you") college grads with no future in a saturated field are going to know. Thanks for the predictions, though, Nostradamus, it's good to see I'm being criticized by someone who hasn't studied a shit worth of game or web design. Keeps me on my toes to deal with the general public who have also not done such things.

BTW, since you love doing research on people to insult them: nice gallery. I mean it, sincerely, those are some nice models. I went, I saw your nice pictures, and then I left... you know, completely unaffected, like every other better-than-medicore but still-not-as-good-as-Randis artist out there.

I love your essay, very well thought out and meaningless.
Let's put aside the internet argument mentality and let's just be better men and walk away from this kind of stupid crap.
I don't even know Randis, he seems like a nice guy that has very respectable artwork and ability. I watched his DA account way back, saw a nicely designed website that I can further my 2d skills on and joined to start a sketchpad and enjoy the information/critiques from other serious artists.

Even better lets drop the confident BS and be friends to end this childish behavior. Hi I'm Luther a Game art and design student currently finishing up my 3rd year of my bachelors degree. If you would like a sketch or colored piece drawn, I do them for free for practice.
I completely agree with college not really doing much for you except putting you in debt and giving you a title of expertise.

So sorry if I bugged you, don't hold a grudge ;p

Except you could put it at the bottom of the page just fine. "Don't be lazy," seriously? That's about as valid as me calling you pretentious for putting it at the top of the page assuming your site is so great that people want to constantly scroll down. I suppose you'd agree Twitter has a lazy design because you can actually see all the content when you click to see it. (protip: it's called usability)

the banner and featured works are about 3 times higher on cghub, ask them to change it for you too.

We have no ads on our page, all banner are part of the forum, linking to latest activities and useful things.

Putting featured work links at the bottom so you do not see them, makes no sense at all.
Not on this site, not on any site and this is a simple fact.

Seriously, this community has grown on user feedback, on reasonable feedback.
Before demanding things in a rude matter like :I just can't be arsed to do such things:
As yourself: WHAT did YOU actually do to contribute to this community to be so demanding?
